Objective
After completing MD radiology (University of Colombo), I am under going training as a Senior Registrar in radiology attached to the National Hospital of Sri Lanka.
1-2 years of overseas training in radiology at a centre of excellence is a mandatory requirement for board certification as a Consultant Radiologist in Sri Lanka. Observer posts are also recognized by the local Board of Study in Radiology as overseas training posts for this purpose. A scholarship for subsistence is awarded by the government of Sri Lanka for such non paid training posts.
I wish to apply for a suitable post in the foreign country to fulfil this requirement and to gain further exposure & training in the field of radiology.

Doctor of Medicine (MD) – Radiology (University of Colombo) – Dec. 2010...
This is a general radiologist training programme. It involves three examinations, a screening examination followed by MD part 1 and part 2 over a period of three years. The screening examination which is the entry examination consists of multiple-choice questions covering relevant areas of general medicine, surgery, gynaecology, obstetrics, paediatrics, anatomy, pathology and physiology. The MD part 1 course involves lectures on radiological anatomy, radiation protection, radiation physics, ultrasound physics and basic MRI & CT in addition to the in-service training in techniques of radiological procedures, which spans up to MD, part 2 examinations. MD part1 examination consists of a multiple choice question paper, an essay question paper, a film viewing session and two viva examinations. The MD part 2 examinations consists of two multiple choice question papers, a rapid film session, a film packet session and two viva examinations. Foreign examiners including those from United Kingdom and Australia are included in the board of examination for MD part 1 & part 2.
The content and structure of MD radiology (University of Colombo) is similar to FRCR (UK).

Senior Registrar in radiology(Post MD local training program of which 11 out of 12 months are completed.

During this period, I underwent training in Ultrasonography, Nuclear Medicine, CT, MRI and interventional radiology in both adult and paediatric age groups, which included vascular, cardiac, chest, ENT/eye/dental, breast, musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, uroradiology, obstetrics & gynaecology and neuroradiology, attached to following major hospitals in Sri Lanka.
1. National Hospital of Sri Lanka
The largest hospital in Sri Lanka with a bed strength of 3000. Department of radiology has a nuclear medicine department with 3 gamma cameras, spiral CT- scanner, 1.0 Tesla two MRI scanners, interventional radiology department with a C- arm fluoroscopy unit, 2 Mammography units, 4 ultrasound scanners with colour Doppler facilities, digital fluoroscopy and plain x- ray facilities. The team consists of 6 consultant radiologists including one interventional radiologist and one consultant in nuclear imaging.
2. Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children
The largest paediatric tertiary referral and teaching hospital in South Asia by bed strength. Department of radiology has a 4-slice spiral CT- scanner, a nuclear medicine department, 3 ultrasound scanners with colour doppler facilities, a fluoroscopy unit and plain x- ray facilities. The team consists of 3 consultant radiologists.
3. Castle Street Hospital for Women and De Soyza Maternity Hospital
These are the two largest women’s hospitals in Sri Lanka, with specialized consultants and facilities for gynaecological, obstetric and neonatalogy units. Department of radiology has 2 ultrasound scanners with colour Doppler facilities, fluoroscopy facilities for HSG and plain x- ray facilities. The department of radiology is managed by one consultant radiologist.
5. District General Hospital Negombo.
The Department of Radiology has an ultrasound scanners with colour Doppler facilities, a digital fluoroscopy machine and plain x- ray, and is managed by one . consultant radiologist.
6.National cancer institute magaragama.
The Department of Radiology has a 4-slice spiral CT- scanner, two ultrasound scanners with colour Doppler facilities, a fluoroscopy machine, mammography and plain x- ray, and is managed by three consultant radiologist.
During the course of my training I developed skills in the following radiological procedures and gained confidence in decision-making.
• Plain x –ray – Reporting of 50 – 75 plain x – rays per day on a roster basis.

Barium studies (Barium swallow, Barium meal and follow through, small bowel enema, single and double contrast barium enemas)

• Ultrasound scan and Doppler studies –
Ultrasound scans of abdomen and pelvis, musculoskeletal system, brain, chest & breast.

Lower limb and upper limb arterial and venous doppler studies.
• Mammography - Reporting of 40-50 mammograms were done per week on a roster basis with US - scan evaluation of breast. US and mammographic localization and US - guided biopsies of breast lesions were done.
• CT - scan – 30 - 50 CT scans per day, including:
Abdomen and pelvis

Paranasal sinuses
Orbits
Spine
Contrast CT - scan of thorax
HRCT- scan chest and temporal bones
CT- angiograms such as thoracic and abdominal aorta, pulmonary angiogram and brain– angiogram.
Reporting of all these scans were done under the supervision of consultant radiologists.
• MRI - scan - The National Hospital of Sri Lanka has two 1 Tesla MRI scanners; MRI brain and spine with MR- angiogram and venogram of the cranial vessels are done. Occasionally pelvis and musculoskeletal MRI- scans are done. Reporting of these scans were done under the supervision of two neuroradiologist.
• Nuclear imaging - The department of radiology has facilities for following studies:

• Image guided biopsies and Interventional procedures -
US and CT - guided biopsies of lung and abdominal masses,
US -guided biopsies of thyroid, renal and liver lesions,
Insertion of percutaneous nephrostomy tubes, drainage tubes for abdominal and pelvic collections, and PTC.
4 - vessel angiogram, lower limb, renal, coeliac, hepatic and abdominal aortic angiograms.
Embolization procedures
(Therapeutic embolisations of external carotid artery AV Malformations, chemoembolization of hepatic tumours, coil embolisation of left testicular vein.)
Lower limb and common iliac angioplasty, inferior venacavography and insertion of IVC filters.
